What are the goals of the program?
- To engage students and their families in the process of study, mitzvot, worship, ma'asim tovim (good deeds), and celebration in order to inspire their continued engagement in lifelong Jewish learning and living.
What was the motivation for the development of the program?
- Wanted to shift the focus of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah away from the prayers to be recited at the ceremony to the mitzvah of gemilut hasadim.
What does the program include?
- It includes classroom learning, community service work, informal learning on a Shabbaton (retreat), community building, social activities and JELLY (junior youth group). BM3T engages students in learning and action through Limudei Yahadut (Judaic Studies) and Ma’asim Tovim (Community Service). These programs enable students to explore Jewish History and Text, and the impact Judaism has in their lives. All BM3T activities are geared toward helping students develop their identities as emerging Jewish adults and members of the global Jewish community.
How is the program structured?
- It is an 18-month program for sixth and seventh graders. It begins with a weekly 2.5 hour class for the first 6 months. It also includes two retreats, nine sessions for families and a Sunday program called Ma'asim Tovim. Beginning in the spring of the sixth grade and continuing through the seventh grade, the students no longer attend class, but rather spend 1.5 and 3 hours every 2-4 weeks volunteering at 1 or 8-10 organizations such as a soup kitchen or a recycling center
